Churro Saltine Toffee is a delightful fusion of sweet and crunchy flavors featuring a crispy saltine cracker base topped with rich caramelized toffee, semi-sweet chocolate, and a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar and sea salt that perfectly mimics the classic churro taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40 saltine crackers (about 2 sleeves)

Toffee Topping

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Chocolate Layer

  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Churro Dusting

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Sea salt, for sprinkling (about 1/2 teaspoon)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large baking sheet with foil or parchment paper to make cleanup easy and prevent sticking.
  2. Arrange Crackers: Lay saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they fit closely without overlapping to create the toffee base.
  3. Make Toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter together with the brown sugar, stirring constantly until the mixture reaches a boil. Continue boiling gently for 3 minutes to ensure proper caramelization.
  4. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers, using a spatula if needed to spread it so all crackers are coated.
  5. Bake Toffee: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes until the toffee is bubbling and fully melted into the crackers.
  6. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to allow the chocolate to soften and melt.
  7. Spread Chocolate: Using a spatula, spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer to create a smooth chocolate topping.
  8. Sprinkle Cinnamon Sugar and Sea Salt: In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar with ground cinnamon. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the chocolate, then finish with a light sprinkling of sea salt.
  9. Cool and Break: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate hardens. Once cooled, break into pieces and serve or store as desired.

Notes

  • For a vegan version, substitute vegan butter and dairy-free chocolate chips.
  • Experiment with different crackers like graham crackers or pretzel crisps for unique flavor variations.
  • Store the toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, refrigerate for two weeks, or freeze for up to three months.
  • Pair the toffee with vanilla ice cream for an indulgent dessert experience.
