Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 puff pastry sheet

Filling

  • 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1/4 cup artichokes, chopped
  • 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1/8 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • Red pepper flakes to taste

Finishing

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature by the time your swirls are assembled.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry sheet completely before handling. Carefully cut it in half into two equal rectangles.
  3. Make Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine chopped fresh spinach, chopped artichokes, shredded parmesan cheese, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, minced garlic, salt, freshly cracked pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix until fully blended and creamy.
  4. Assemble Swirls: Spread the spinach and artichoke mixture evenly over one half of the puff pastry sheet. Cover this layer with the other half of the puff pastry, effectively sandwiching the filling.
  5. Cut and Shape: Using a sharp knife, cut the puff pastry sandwich into six even long strips lengthwise. Twist each strip gently and then form each into a swirl shape, tucking the ends underneath to secure them during baking.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Whisk together the egg and 1 teaspoon water to create an egg wash. Lightly brush the top of each swirl with this mixture to promote a golden brown finish.
  7. Bake: Place the swirls on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until the pastry is fully cooked and golden brown. Baking time may vary depending on your oven.
  8. Cool and Serve: Allow the swirls to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to ensure they hold their shape and the filling sets.

Notes

  • Ensure puff pastry is fully thawed to prevent cracking while shaping.
  • Feel free to adjust seasoning, especially red pepper flakes, based on your heat preference.
  • Swirls can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
  • Serve warm for best flavor and texture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the oven to maintain crispness.
