Pastry
Filling
- 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
- 1/4 cup artichokes, chopped
- 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
- 1/8 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cracked pepper to taste
- Red pepper flakes to taste
For Egg Wash
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp water
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the swirls.
- Thaw Puff Pastry: Thaw one sheet of puff pastry according to package instructions, ensuring it is pliable and ready to work with.
- Prepare Filling: In a bowl, combine the chopped spinach, chopped artichokes, shredded parmesan cheese, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, minced garlic, salt, fresh cracked pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix until well combined for a flavorful filling.
- Cut Puff Pastry: Cut the puff pastry sheet in half, creating two equal rectangles.
- Assemble Layers: Spread the spinach artichoke mixture evenly onto one half of the puff pastry sheet.
- Sandwich Filling: Lay the other puff pastry half on top of the spinach artichoke mixture to create a sandwich with the filling in the center.
- Slice Strips: Using a sharp knife, cut the puff pastry sandwich into 6 even long strips along the length of the rectangle.
- Form Swirls: Twist each strip gently and then roll it into a spiral swirl shape, tucking the ends underneath to keep them secure during baking.
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg with 1 teaspoon of water and brush this egg wash over each swirl to give a shiny, golden finish.
- Bake: Place the swirls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 22-24 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and allow the swirls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm as a delicious appetizer or snack!
Notes
- Make sure to thaw the puff pastry completely to avoid cracking when rolling.
- Use fresh spinach for best flavor and texture; frozen spinach can be used but should be fully drained to prevent sogginess.
- Adjust seasoning including salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes according to your taste preference.
- Swirl shapes can be varied; you can also make pinwheels instead of twists if desired.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven for crispiness.
